Standing Together on International Purple Day

March 26th marks International Purple Day, a global movement that shines a light on epilepsy and the millions of individuals and families it affects. At Core Assist, we’re proud to stand in solidarity with the epilepsy community—advocating for greater awareness, acceptance, and understanding. Epilepsy is a neurological condition that affects over 50 million people globally. Despite its prevalence, it remains widely misunderstood. Too often, people living with epilepsy face stigma, fear, or exclusion—simply because others don’t fully understand the condition. This is why Purple Day is so important. It’s more than just a date on the calendar—it’s a chance to start conversations, challenge misconceptions, and let those living with epilepsy know they are seen, heard, and valued.

What is Epilepsy?

Epilepsy is a disorder of the brain that causes recurrent seizures. Seizures occur when there is a sudden burst of electrical activity in the brain, which can temporarily affect how a person feels or behaves. There are many types of seizures, and epilepsy can affect people in different ways. Some seizures may involve convulsions and loss of consciousness, while others can be subtle, such as staring spells or brief confusion. Importantly, with the right treatment and support, many people with epilepsy live full and independent lives.

Why Purple Day Matters

Purple Day was founded in 2008 by a young Canadian girl named Cassidy Megan. Her goal was simple but powerful: to raise awareness and let people with epilepsy know they’re not alone. Since then, Purple Day has grown into a worldwide movement. Across schools, businesses, and communities, people wear purple, share stories, and speak out to foster a world that is more informed, accepting, and inclusive. At Core Assist, we fully support this mission. Our work with NDIS participants includes individuals living with epilepsy, and we see first-hand the importance of raising awareness and providing compassionate, tailored support.

How Core Assist Supports Individuals with Epilepsy

At Core Assist, we specialise in disability support services that focus on individual needs, goals, and well-being. For participants living with epilepsy, this means creating personalised care plans that prioritise safety, independence, and quality of life.

Here’s how we support participants with epilepsy:

Tailored support plans to accommodate medical needs and seizure management
Staff trained in epilepsy awareness, seizure response, and emergency care
Routine and structure to help minimise stress triggers
Encouraging community participation and social inclusion
Promoting education and empowerment through information sharing and advocacy

Most importantly, we listen. Every participant is unique, and we work closely with individuals, families, and healthcare professionals to ensure our support is effective and respectful.

How You Can Get Involved on Purple Day

You don’t have to be a medical professional or support worker to make a difference. Anyone can play a role in building a more inclusive and supportive society. Here’s how you can participate in Purple Day:

Wear purple – It’s a simple but powerful way to show your support.
Start a conversation – Talk to family, friends, or colleagues about epilepsy.
Share facts – Dispel myths and educate others with evidence-based information.
Show kindness – A little compassion can go a long way in making someone feel accepted.
Use your platform – Post on social media using hashtags like #PurpleDay #EpilepsyAwareness to spread the word.

Together, we can break down barriers and create a world where people living with epilepsy feel empowered and understood.

Moving Forward with Empathy and Awareness

At Core Assist, we believe that awareness leads to action, and action leads to change. Purple Day is a reminder that when we come together, we can make a real impact—not just on one day, but every day. We are proud to support individuals living with epilepsy as part of our commitment to holistic, person-centred disability care. From inclusive activities and daily support to advocacy and education, we are here every step of the way.
